Dental Care

Vaccination
Feline Leukemia (FeLV): a form of cancer, this is a highly contagious virus and is one of the leading killers of cats. A blood test may be necessary before vaccinations. Affected cats are immuno-compromised and subject to other infections that can be fatal.
Behavioral Counseling
We can advise you regarding the correction of problems such as excessive barking, chewing, anxiety, spraying, scratching, digging, house soiling, and aggression. You can rely on our many years of experience to help you correct your pet's negative behaviors, and encourage positive ones!
Nutritional Counseling
Cats are obligate carnivores, which means they must consume animal protein. A vegetable based diet is unhealthy for a cat and will lead to a number of health problems. Obesity is the biggest problem we see on a daily basis. In general, dry foods have higher carbohydrates than canned foods therefore we will often recommend a canned food for weight loss and leaner body mass. It is most efficient to feed a cat multiple meals per 24 hours as with an automated feeder with a timer.

To avoid the complications and illnesses that come with parasites such as heartworm, ticks, fleas and worms, we give you information and medications for your pet based on environmental, risk analysis, and specific needs. We also offer routine fecal testing as a preventative measure.

Feline Panleukopenia: also known as feline distemper, this is a highly contagious virus, easily transmitted from cat to cat, and can be fatal.cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration.
Pain Management
After receiving his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Colorado State University, he completed an internship in advanced surgery and internal medicine through the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. Dr. Terry Watrous is a Utah native but has called Colorado home for 27 years. Dr. Watrous is a member of the International Veterinary Academy of Pain Management and also does volunteer work with the American Cancer Society.

Leptospirosis Treatment
Canine Leptospirosis: a bacterium that initially affects the kidneys and may lead to fatalities. The bacteria are carried mainly by wild animals, particularly raccoons. There have been several reported cases in Boulder County.

Rabies: Rabies is on the rise in Colorado. While bats have been a traditional carrier in Boulder County (over 20 cases a year), in 2012 a rabid Bison was found outside Ft. Collins, and skunks are increasingly more infected. Colorado law requires cats and dogs to be vaccinated against rabies. Rabies is a fatal viral infection of the nervous system that attacks all warm blooded animals including humans. There is no cure, and vaccination is the only protection. Most transmissions occur from the bite of a contaminated animal.

Obesity Treatment
This is a very common question our clients have. Both foods can be very nutritious. There is however, one major advantage of dry food over canned. The dry food will be better for the animals teeth than the canned, simply because dry food will help prevent tartar buildup. Small breeds of dogs are particularly prone to dental disease so we usually advise dry kibble for them. Some disease like feline obesity and kidney failure are best managed with canned foods.

We offer electrocardiography (ECG) monitoring and in-house interpretation, or internet transmission to a cardiologist if needed. On site exams can be arranged with a mobile board-certified veterinary cardiologist, Dr. Sanderson with Rocky Mountain Veterinary Cardiology, for a more in-depth cardiac assessment if desired.

By far one of the most common diseases we see in dogs and cats over 2 years of age is dental disease. The first teeth to show signs are usually the large back upper teeth and the upper fang teeth. Early plaque quickly turns into tartar if left unattended. Periodontal disease typically follows, oftentimes noted by bad breath and irritated gums.

Wound and Fracture Care
Our modern surgical suite allows for a wide variety of surgical procedures. In addition to the common spays and neuters, we have the equipment and knowledge to address such maladies as fracture repairs, torn ligaments, cystotomies, and tumor removal from our smallest kittens to our largest dogs. We routinely have board certified veterinary surgeons on-site for more complicated procedures such as TPLOs, Arthroscopies, and MPL surgeries.

A 1990 graduate of Kansas State University College of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Kay received his undergraduate Bachelor of Arts in Zoology at the University of Montana. His interests include small animal medicine, general surgery and dentistry and he is a member of the AVMA, Colorado VMA and the Denver Area Veterinary Medical Association. He is passionate about the care of animals and spent his childhood shadowing his veterinarian father. He volunteers his time with multiple animal shelters and rescue groups, service dogs for children with diabetes, and sponsors a tiger named Sheeba at the Wild Animal Sanctuary. Dr. Kay lives in Boulder with his twin daughters and 3 cats. He is an avid skier, outdoorsman, world traveler, reader, meditator, and loves all that Boulder and Colorado offer!

X-Ray
We have state of the art digital radiography for both whole body and dentistry. Images can be taken in moments and may be sent to a variety of board-certified veterinary specialists for consultation if needed. Dr. Stein and Dr. Sharz, internists with Boulder Veterinary Imaging, have served us for years in providing us diagnostic ultrasounds for our patients in need. Onsite ultrasounds can be scheduled for urgent and non-urgent cases.
Dental Radiology
We at South Boulder Animal Hospital offer superior quality pet teeth cleaning. All the doctors and technicians have advanced training in dentistry. All patients have dental x-rays taken. We take pride in our work but even we see cases that are better referred to board certified veterinary dentists and will not hesitate to recommend that when appropriate.
Microchipping
Microchip identification helps return on average 8,000 pets to their loving homes every day. We are happy to offer microchip services for peace of mind if your furry friend were to ever get lost. Microchipping is a safe, quick, and inexpensive service we provide at any time and at any age.
