Dermatomyositis is an inflammatory disease that causes distinctive purple-red colored skin rashes on the face, eyelids, knuckles, elbows, chest, back, and knees, as well as muscle weakness, and in severe cases, muscle atropy. The muscle weakness often affects the neck, upper arms, shoulders, hips, and thighs, and may cause difficulty swallowing or talking. The disease is rare and currently has no known cure, similar to other autoimmune disorders in which the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells. Dermatomyositis can lead to other conditions, such as scleroderma, lupus, and rheumatoid arthritis, as well as cardiovascular disease, lung disease, and cancer.
Medical Weight Loss
Vasculitis is an inflammatory disease that causes the blood vessels to weaken, narrow, or scar, which can restrict blood flow and ultimately damage tissue and organs. It is a rare condition that is also known as arteritis or angiitis, and may affect only the skin or a particular organ, or it may target a variety of areas. The most common symptoms of vasculitis include headache, fever, fatigue, general aches, weight loss, rash, night sweats, and numbness or weakness, or loss of blood flow in a limb. Her authorship in these areas of expertise is extensive and she has been fortunate to write, review or edit manuscripts for many of the major medical and dermatology journals: Pediatric Dermatology, Pediatrics, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, JAMA Dermatology, etc., textbooks, popular reference resources like VisualDx, and patient directed articles on preventive health.

Cynthia Trickett has been a Physician Assistant since 1995 when she graduated with her Bachelor of Science in Physician Assistant Studies from the University of Texas Medical Branch, Galveston, TX. She practiced Family Medicine for approximately 3 years in Houston, Texas before transferring into Dermatology in 1998, and has been practicing in this specialty ever since. Nnenna Agim, MD is an experienced dermatologist board certified in both general and pediatric dermatology by the American Board of Dermatology. Radiation Therapy

Other types of treatment for non-melanoma skin cancer include chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and biologic therapy. Dr. Becca Marcus is a board certified dermatologist specializing in medical, surgical and cosmetic dermatology. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University and earned her medical degree from New York Medical College. After completing an internship in general surgery at St. Vincent Hospital in Manhattan, she continued her training at Columbia University Medical Center, completing both a fellowship in dermatological clinical research and residency in dermatology. Mohs Surgery
One effective type of surgical dermatology is Mohs Microscopic Surgery. Layers of cancerous skin are moved, little by little. After each layer is removed, the doctor examines it under a microscope. If any cancer is seen on the layer, another layer is removed. This way, the surgeon can remove all of the cancerous cells without damaging the surrounding tissue. It is an outpatient procedure that requires only local anesthetic. Mohs Surgery has a 94% to 99% cure rate.

The best treatment for eczema is prevention and treatment as early in the condition as possible. Keeping the skin moist and removing any fragrance containing products (soaps, moisturizers, detergents, etc) are key steps, as well as taking lukewarm rather than hot showers, and applying moisturizer immediately following bathing. Topical steroids and antihistamines are the mainstays of treatment for the itching and areas of inflamed skin.

Lupus is an autoimmune disease that causes the body’s immune system to mistakenly attack the joints, kidneys, blood cells, skin, heart, lungs, and even the brain. The disease can be difficult to diagnose as the symptoms are similar to other conditions. The most common sign of the disease is a butterfly shaped rash across the cheeks, however, it does not occur in all cases. The most common symptoms include persistent fever, fatigue, shortness of breath, chest pain, sunburns or lesions from sun exposure, headaches, as well as pain, swelling, and stiffness of the joints.
Chemical Peels
We have combined tumescent anesthesia (to numb the skin), subcision (a process of going under the skin and undermining and loosening adhesions beneath the scars using a micro dissector), TCA chemical peels, and laser treatments to address all types of acne scars.
