General Info

Established in 2007, the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department works to provide a safe and secure environment, safeguard lives and property, preserve peace, and maintain law and order. It is comprised of more than 1,500 sworn officers and over 300 civilian employees. The department operates criminal investigation and traffic enforcement units. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department maintains a special investigation unit that has aviation, K-9 and mounted patrol sections. It also provides citizens with copies of accident reports and sponsors outreach programs. The department supports a crisis intervention team that helps police officers to handle the needs of people s mental illness issues. The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department operates a citizens police academy that provides training programs related to patrol procedures, defensive tactics, firearms instruction, laws, first aid and investigations. It offers parking tickets and copies of police reports. In addition, the department hosts Crime Stoppers and Amber Alert programs.
