Deep Cleaning
In the early stages of gum disease, most treatment involves a special cleaning called scaling and root planning, which removes plaque and tartar around the tooth and smoothing the root surfaces. Antibiotics or antimicrobials may be used to supplement the effects of scaling and root planing. In most cases of early gum disease, called gingivitis, scaling and root planing and proper daily cleaning achieve a satisfactory result. More advanced cases may require surgical treatment, which involves cutting the gums – sometimes with the assistance of a laser – and removing the hardened plaque build-up and recontouring the damaged bone. The procedure is also designed to smooth root surfaces and reposition the gum tissue so it will be easier to keep clean.

Over a period of time, the jawbone associated with missing teeth atrophies or is resorbed. "My dentist referred me years ago for gum surgery (my gums kept receding), but I had heard such horror stories that I didn't follow through. Finally, with the dental hygienist suggesting that I may want to at least have a consultation before it's not an option anymore (that scared me!), I had my consult with Dr. Paul. He was so calm, down to earth, and reassuring that I then proceeded with the 4 needed gum grafts (just completed the last 2 weeks ago!).I used music with my IPod during the surgery that I highly recommend doing (better then Xanax!). Also did positive imagery before and after and am happy to report that all surgeries were successful! Having to do any surgery is not fun, but you're in very competent hands with Dr. Paul!"
Tooth Extractions
Bone Grafting
Bone grafting can repair potential implant sites with inadequate bone structure due to previous extractions, gum disease, or injuries. The bone is either obtained from a tissue bank or your own bone is taken from the jaw. Sinus bone grafts are also performed to replace bone in the posterior upper jaw. In addition, special membranes may be utilized that dissolve under the gum and protect the bone graft and encourage bone regeneration. This is called guided bone regeneration or guided tissue regeneration.
